JITENDRA KUMAR SHRIVASTAVA IN MADHUBANI Published 24.05.12, 12:00 AM

A joint team of police from Madhubani and Supaul districts on Wednesday found the vehicle that the driver of a rural bank had used to flee while decamping with Rs 30 lakh a day before.

The cash box was also found at Malarpur village under Kishanpur police station of Supaul district on Wednesday.

The driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav, is still at large and the police are yet to find the money.

On Tuesday afternoon, Shiv Kumar fled with Rs 30 lakh of Uttar Bihar Kshetriya Gramin Bank when Madhukar Prasad Sinha, the cash in-charge of the bank’s main branch of the district, had gone to deposit Rs 10 lakh in the Madhepur branch.

On the pretext of turning the vehicle, Shiv Kumar fled towards Supaul district. The incident occurred around 4.30pm.

Earlier, Sinha had taken Rs 60 lakh from the main branch of the bank at Jhanjharpur in Madhubani to distribute it among its branches.

Till the time Shiv Kumar fled, Sinha had distributed Rs 7 lakh in the bank’s Bhairo Ashthan branch, Rs 5 lakh in Paitghat, Rs 5 lakh in Lakhnour, Rs 3 lakh in Deep and Rs 10 lakh in Madhepur.

Sinha was accompanied by two guards — Jitendra Mishra and Rajendra Singh — who are deputed at the main branch of the bank.

Deputy inspector-general of police Darbhanga range Sudhanshu Kumar told The Telegraph: “Since we have recovered the vehicle and the driver (Shiv Kumar) had been working with the bank for quite some time, we will be able to arrest him soon. We have formed police teams to nab Shiv Kumar, who is still absconding with the cash.”

The officer said nobody had been arrested so far.

“We have not arrested any one yet in connection with the incident. We have detained the guards, Jitendra Mishra and Rajendra Singh. We have also been questioning them on how they were fooled by the driver before he fled,” the deputy inspector-general added.

According to sources, police are questioning Shiv Kumar’s father Ram Prasad Yadav, mother Sita Devi and father in-law Ram Naresh Yadav about his whereabouts.

The owner of the vehicle has also been traced and is being questioned. Police teams are conducting raids at all possible hideouts of the driver.

Shiv Kumar is a resident of Laupha Sahanitol village under Lakhnaur police station in Madhubani district. Police sources told The Telegraph that Shiv Kumar might have crossed the international border and sneaked into Nepal.
