Patna, Jan. 15: The performance of the Bihar policemen, especially in the horse and dog shows, in many ways outshined the other events at today’s reward distribution programme.

The event saw 406 police officers and 35 civilians winning medals.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar today gave away medals to the recipients for their acts of bravery at Gandhi Maidan. However, it was the show of strength of Bihar policemen that received the eyeballs at the event.

The visitors were left cheering when the policemen performed the horse and dog shows. The police personnel with their 15 horses and nine dogs performed some breathtaking stunts.

Around 20 riders from different units took part in the show and performed skills like jumping cross bars, single bar and double bars. “It takes many months to train these horses to perform in such a manner and sometimes it’s very dangerous as well, simply because there are chances of losing control over the horse. Holding the reins properly becomes vital,” said Manoj Kumar Singh, a police rider.

He said: “These horses are also very useful in night patrolling and chasing criminals in remote villages and forest areas, especially in diara areas where police vehicles don not have access to. There are around 70 such horses of best breed working for Bihar police.”

On previous occasions, some of the horses have won gold and silver medals in the national championship. The performance received praises not only from the crowd, but also from the chief minister and DGP Neel Mani.

After the hurdle-jumps by horses, it was the turn of sniffer dogs. Nine dogs, including Labradors, performed stunts by easily identifying packets containing explosives. Some other dogs jumped through rings, while others obeyed the instructions of their master, saluting and crawling on the floor. During the award distribution ceremony, Bihar police showcased arms and ammunition used by the state police in various situations.

Special Task Force (STF) showcased their special riot-control vehicle, bullet-proof vehicle with wireless satellite phone. The special battalion of Bihar police, who fight in forest areas, also showcased their skills today.
