Patna: A group of Patna University students and residents of the area clashed over an eve-teasing incident on Ashok Rajpath on Thursday night.
The students, who were boarders of Iqbal Hostel of Patna College, damaged cars and motorcycles parked on the roads and even damaged makeshift shops that have come up on the stretch.
According to residents, the Iqbal Hostel boarders created the ruckus over a minor altercation between some boarders and residents.
"On Thursday afternoon, a few boarders had an altercation with a couple standing on the road," said Sudhakar Rai, a resident of the area. "The boarders allegedly tried to misbehave with the couple, however, they were saved by some local residents."
In the evening a large number of boarders from Iqbal Hostel reached the Ashok Rajpath creating ruckus on the road. The boarders, who were carrying hockey sticks and bamboo sticks, beat up the passersby on the road.
The boarders also damaged some makeshift shops on Ashok Rajpath. Sources said the boarders also hurled bombs on the road. The situation was brought under control after Pirbahore police reached the spot.
Pirbahore police station house officer Gulam Sarwar said: "Based on the statement of the residents the police have arrested boarders Mohammed Irsad, Afzal Raza and Mohatalim on charges of group clash. Based on a video footage we have identified 15 people and action will be taken against the students."
The Patna University, too, has decided to take strict action against the boarders behind the incident. Dean students' welfare K.N. Jha said: "We have asked the college administration to identify the boarders behind the incident. Action will be taken against them."
The students are also afraid after the incident. A Patna College student said: "Group clash at Patna College has become regular. In most of the cases students involved in such incidents are also boarders. The university on regular intervals should conduct raids at hostels and evict illegal boarders occupying the hostels."
