Bhagalpur, Aug. 9: A homemaker and her distant relative were caught in a pool of allegations over attempted rape and a “planned” bobbitisation.

According to Arvind Kumar Singh, deputy superintendent of police (headquarters), Naugachia district, the incident took place on August 7, at Kashimtola locality under Gotkharik panchayat of Kharik block of Naugachia sub-division, when a homemaker (in mid-40s) severed Md. Sajjad’s (33) private parts with a sharp kitchen knife when the later trespassed into her house. The victim alleged she was sleeping alone inside her house when the accused attempted to outrage her modesty.

According to Singh, the accused is a distant relative of the victim and had earlier made indecent advances, the woman had disclosed before the police after the incident. In her complaint to the police she alleged the incident happened when her husband was out of the village. “I tried my best to resist him and even raised an alarm but when I was completely helpless, I somehow managed to grab the kitchen knife and tried to save my modesty,” she broke down while narrating the incident to the police.

Sajjad was arrested from the spot from the clutches of the victim’s neighbours and was rushed to a local health centre. “He was bleeding profusely and doctors there immediately referred him to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), Bhagalpur, for treatment,” Singh said. Sajjad, whose condition was critical, however, has shown signs of recovery today. “He is recovering but he is not in a position to talk,” said a doctor attending to Sajjad at JLNMCH.

Earlier, in a statement before the police, Sajjad alleged the incident was a well-planed conspiracy to implicate him in a false case. He also alleged that the incident was a result of an old land dispute and it was a conspiracy of Md. Najjo, the brother of the victim, Md. Paltu, her neighbour, and her two sons.

Wife of Sajjad, in her counter complaint to the police, accused the five persons.

“The woman, along with the four persons, called my husband to her house and attacked him with a knife,” she alleged in her complaint.

“Prima facie, the accused has been suspected of attempted rape and the woman attacked him to save her modesty. The investigation would clear the cloud over the real cause behind the incident,” Singh said.

An assistant sub-inspector of Naugachia, on condition of anonymity, said the police are trying to tie the loose ends of the incident.

“The woman used to prepare food in the upstairs kitchen. Then how was the kitchen knife found in a room on the ground floor?” he said. He also said Najjo and a native of Ujani were prime suspects in the case. “The woman returned to her house at Kashimtola from Ujani on August 6 with her brother. Earlier, she used to live in Ujani,” the police said.

According to the assistant sub-inspector, the police have stared investigating the immediate motive behind the incident and are also probing into the old land dispute between the accused and the victim.
