Patna, Nov. 15: Students of classes X and XII today took part in competitions under Shikhar, organised by The Telegraph despite exams round the corner.
“Sports are a part of education. They help keep the body and mind fit to concentrate on studies. My parents always support me to play outdoor games and take part in such events. High school sports allow students to take pride in who they are and what they have accomplished,” said Shwetank Kumar, a Class X student of Baldwin Academy.
“Board exams are three months away, the syllabus is almost complete and we still have ample time to revise and re-revise for the final examinations. Our school gives equal importance to both studies and physical fitness and it’s my last opportunity to achieve something for my school. I did not inform my parents about taking part in this competition. But I know that when I win, they would be proud of me,” said Aditya Pandey, a Class XII student of St Michael’s High School.
Amrish Jha, a physical education teacher of the same school, said: “Sports play a pivotal role in grooming a young athlete, especially in the middle to high school years when athletes mature physically and mentally. This is crucial because if you can capture a person’s admiration and trust, you can motivate him to perform at a higher level not only in sports but also in life.”
He added: “Sports help reduce examination stress and manage anxiety levels in the run-up to important examinations. Three-four-day events cannot ruin studies much and students still get enough time to prepare for the board examinations.”
Many students showed their enthusiasm for sports, even aspiring to pursue careers in the field. Priyali Singh Rathore, a Class X student of St Dominic Savio’s High School, said: “No matter what sports I participate in, the participation certificates and winning awards would help me build my career in this field after my board examinations.”
Priyali’s mother said: “I am happy that school does not only concentrate on education but also in physical fitness through various sports.”
