The manager of a water theme park in Rajarhat and another employee have been arrested after a woman lodged a complaint that she had spotted a CCTV camera in one of the four changing rooms for women.

The woman, a resident of Jessore Road, called the Calcutta Leather Complex police station and alleged that the park authorities had intentionally positioned the camera in a manner that it would record images of women changing, an officer said.

Following the complaint, the manager of the park was detained and the complainant asked to come to the police station to lodge a written complaint. After the complaint was lodged, manager Kishan Sonkar and Rajlu Sheikh, another employee of the park, were arrested.

"Based on the complaint, we decided to take suo motu action. One of our officers went to the spot and seized the camera from the ladies' changing room. Two employees have been arrested," an officer of South 24-Parganas police said.

Metro tried to contact the spokesperson of the water park by calling the numbers given on its Facebook page. All the numbers were switched off.

Human resource development minister Smriti Irani had on April 4 spotted a security camera at a Goa outlet of Fabindia, trained at the enclosure where customers try out new clothes.

Several staff members of Fabindia had been arrested on the charge of voyeurism based on the minister's complaint.

The water park in Calcutta covers 75,000sq ft area and was started in 1999.

According to a source in the park, the woman, who came with her family members, went to the ladies' changing room to change clothes before getting into the swimming pool. Visitors can hire swimming costumes.

"The moment she saw the security camera on the ceiling, she rushed out of the room and alerted two of her family members who were accompanying her. They went to a park official's room, seeking to know why the camera had been installed. The woman even referred to what had happened to the Union minister and protested the installation of the security camera," said a police officer.

The official initially tried to explain to the woman that the cameras in the changing rooms were not active for days and therefore she had not been filmed, the officer said.

"The official claimed the authorities had installed the cameras following complaints of items like swimming costumes being stolen from the ladies' changing rooms. But they had not been active for days. The explanation, however, did not satisfy the woman, who later called up the police station," the officer said.

While the woman was talking to park officials, others gathered after being alerted by her protest. "I was about to enter one of the four changing rooms for women when I heard a commotion. I saw the woman arguing with the officials of the park," said another woman present there.

"After hearing the allegation, I went back to the changing room and found out that the camera was there. Some women guards were trying to remove the wires attached to the camera," she said.

"We would scan the footage to determine what had exactly happened," said an officer of the leather complex police station.

In the Union minister's case, police officers had said the images showed the customers waist upwards and that many others - apart from Irani - both men and women, had been filmed.

Fabindia had apologised to Irani "for the inconvenience that had been inadvertently caused (to her)" but added in a statement that "there were no hidden cameras anywhere in the store, including the trial rooms".

It had said the camera in question at the Candolim store in north Goa was part of the surveillance system and was installed in the shopping area.

"These cameras are in full public view and the fact (that) surveillance cameras are installed is prominently displayed in all the stores," the statement had said.
