Calcutta: The bypolls to the Uluberia Lok Sabha seat in Howrah and Noapara Assembly constituency in North 24 -Parganas were held amid allegations of proxy voting and intimidation against the Trinamul.
The seats fell vacant after the deaths of Sultan Ahmed, Trinamul MP from Uluberia, and Madhusudan Ghose, Congress MLA from Noapara.
The Trinamul has fielded Sajda Ahmed, Sultan Ahmed's widow, in Uluberia and Sunil Singh, a relative of Bhatpara MLA Arjun Singh, in Noapara.
The election commission had deployed 30 CRPF companies in Uluberia and six in Noapara.
Reports of alleged intimidation came in from Gangarampur in Uluberia, while the Trinamul was accused of booth jamming in Shyamnagar, North 24-Parganas. In Noapara, the BJP accused Trinamul polling agents of capturing booths.
Trinamul leaders refused to comment on the bypolls.
