Bijon Setu, that connects Gariahat and Kasba, has overgrowth in its crevices that could threaten the structure.

Sanjib Mukherjee, who would use the bridge to take his son to tuition at Ballygunge from their Kasba home, has been taking an alternative route for the past few days.

"The bridge shakes heavily under the impact of vehicles. Now I cross over the rail tracks adjoining Ballygunge station instead of taking Bijon Setu," said Mukherjee.

A shopkeeper at the market that flourishes under the bridge said chunks of concrete often come lose from the underbelly of the bridge.

The bridge has been given a fresh coat of paint was added to hide the damages.

A close inspection of the bridge revealed trees and creepers growing out of crevices on the sides of the deck slab.

A resident of the area said the green growth has been there for the last couple of years.

The southern side of the bridge that faces Fern Place underwent some repair about a year and a half ago, local residents said.

"But the northern side that faces Swinhoe Lane has not been repaired in the past five years. We fail to understand why there is only partial upkeep," a resident said.
