The state government on Monday clamped Section 144 on a stretch in Salt Lake’s DF Block, which houses several administrative headquarters.
The prohibitory section, said senior police officers, have been put in place to curb demonstrations in and around Bikash Bhavan and Sech Bhavan, the headquarters of the education department and the irrigation department, respectively.
The stretch, less than half a kilometre, also includes Mayukh Bhavan, which houses various government departments, and Lalkuthi island.
Sanjay Bansal, the district magistrate of North 24-Parganas, told Metro that the orders would remain in place for a month.
“The section has been imposed so that no untoward incident takes place around these premises. We will review the situation after a month,” he said.
“The section has been imposed because the protesters sometimes turn violent,” said a police officer.
