Calcutta, April 16: The CBI today told the court hearing the Rizwanur Rahman case that “if necessary”, former deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Gyanwant Singh, Trinamul Congress MLA Javed Khan and Rizwanur’s uncle Shaidul Alam could be included in the list of accused.
CBI lawyer Partha Tapaswi made the comments after the city sessions court judge hearing the death case, Amit Chattopadhyay, expressed surprise at the central investigating agency’s decision not to include the trio in the accused list.
“During the hearing, I realised that Singh had instructed his subordinates to help (industrialist) Ashok Todi get back his daughter (Rizwanur’s wife Priyanka). But surprisingly, I found that he was not made an accused in the case. Similarly, there are many documents showing that Javed Khan had forced Priyanka to return to her father and Shaidul had taken money from Todi to try and separate the couple,” Chattopadhyay said.
Tapaswi replied that “several depositions were made before the CBI against the trio but the investigating agency failed to gather enough evidences to prove their guilt”. “So they were not included in the accused list. However, if the agency felt it necessary, it could include them in the case in the near future.”
On September 21, 2007, days after marrying Priyanka, Rizwanur was found dead beside the railway tracks near Patipukur.
