Coming to Manchester United, you do need time to settle in. It's not easy. In my time, there was... Dwight Yorke who gave an immediate response. He was fantastic from day one. He was an exception - Sir Alex Ferguson
One of the few footballers the legendary Manchester United manager has called "fantastic", is coming to town.
Dwight Yorke, the former Manchester United and Trinidad and Tobago striker, is scheduled to be in Calcutta on Wednesday for a football clinic with kids at CC&FC.
Most famous for his four-season stint with the Red Devils, during which he spearheaded the treble campaign in 1999, Yorke has since gone on to become one of the club's ambassadors along with the likes of Park Ji-Sung and Dennis Irwin.
The fearsome forward known for his speed and strike rate now also holds a UEFA B coaching licence. "Dwight Yorke's visit to the club is great news because it highlights what we want to promote... sports in the club. I am personally a Manchester United supporter. So it doesn't get better than this!" said Sunny Puri, president, CC&FC.
It might be his first visit to Calcutta, but Yorke is no stranger to India. In 2013, he landed in New Delhi for a Manchester United fans event, celebrating the club's 20th EPL win. He came back in 2015 as a part of Chevrolet's United Trophy Tour in New Delhi. He completed his India hat-trick a year later, this time for an event called "I Love United India" in Bengaluru and Mumbai, with fellow Red Devil Quinton Fortune.
Yorke's scoring exploits for EPL side Aston Villa had prompted Alex Ferguson to sign him up for Manchester United for a fee of £12.6m in 1998, making him the club's costliest signing at that point. In his very first season, he finished as the top goal-scorer with 29, helping the club win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. A feat that the third richest club in the world - after Real Madrid and Barcelona - has never been able to repeat since.
Yorke went on to win two more Premier League titles and an Intercontinental Cup during his stay at Old Trafford, with Andy Cole alongside him, and the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane behind him.
And now, some of Calcutta's footballing little champs will get to play ball with the United man. "After his event at CC&FC, he'll go back to Hyatt Regency. There will be a meet-and-greet with some Manchester United supporters in Calcutta," said Tamas Sinha, executive member, Kolkata Manchester United Supporters Club.
With this, Dwight Yorke will join a long list of football legends to have visited Calcutta - Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi to Lothar Matthaus, Roberto Carlos, Oliver Kahn.
