The Commissioner’s Cup final, organised by the Howrah City Police, was held on February 7 at the Shibpur Police Lines. Jagachha Police Station and Belur Police Station had qualified for the final match after a month-long tournament played between teams under the 14 police stations in Howrah. The final was a tough match between the two teams and it finished with Jagachha Police Station winning 3-1. The winners received Rs 11,000 cash prize along with gifts and the runners-up Belur Police Station, took home Rs 6,000.

This was the fourth edition of the Commissioner’s Cup that started ever since the Police Commissionerate was formed in 2011. This year’s tournament kicked off in December 2014, as 80 football clubs from different parts of Howrah, under the jurisdiction of Howrah City Police, competed with each other to represent their respective police stations. Finally, 14 teams were selected to represent the 14 police stations under the commissionerate. On February 1 and 2, the quarter-finals were held and on February 5 the semi-finals were played between the four police stations that had qualified — Jagachha, Chatterjeehat, Belur and Bally. Jagachha and Belur emerged finalists.

“The tournament is getting better each year as more clubs are coming forward to take part,” said Sumit Kumar, the deputy commissioner (Traffic).
