A man died after being knocked down by a trailer on Coal Berth Road in the Parnashree area on Friday.

The accident happened around 10.45am when the victim, Kamal Kanta Das, in his early 40s, was returning home from market.

He tried to cross the road but did not notice the trailer coming from behind, said police.

According to witnesses, the driver slammed the brakes but since the vehicle was heavily loaded, it came to a halt only after hitting Kamal.

Kamal had sustained injuries on his head and chest.

He was taken to SSKM Hospital where doctors declared him dead. "The doctors told us that Kamal died of internal haemorrhage," said an officer.

The driver of the trailer has been arrested.
