A two-storey illegal building, which functioned as Trinamul party office, was demolished on Thursday following an order of Calcutta High Court in Murshidabad district's Burwan block on Thursday.
A team led by Kandi subdivisional deputy magistrate Mithun Majumdar carried out the court directive issued to them two weeks ago.
The order, issued in response to a petition filed by Congress leader Safiur Rahaman, asked the district administration to demolish the illegal structure.
A former Trinamul leader, Safiur switched over to the Congress six months ago.
Sources said imprisoned Burwan MLA Jiban Krishna Saha, arrested two months ago in connection with the alleged school recruitment scam, had built the structure on land belonging to the public works department near Himghar More at Burwan's Gramshalika village.
"The illegal building affected shop owners. I moved court in their interest," Safiur said.
District administration officials said they brought a bulldozer to demolish the building on May 24 but it proved insufficient for the job.
"We ordered five more machines and could demolish the building," said Kandi SDO Naveen Kumar Chandra.
Trinamul's Burwan block vice-president Mahe Alam refuted allegations that a "formal" Trinamul party office operated from the illegal structure.
"The construction of the building was a result of Saha's oversight. We admit our error in building the structure on public land," he said.
Residents, however, said the structure was a functional office since last year.
"The building bore large flex banners of party leaders to give the impression that it had the sanction of Trinamul leadership," said Gramshalika resident.
