Raiganj: The headmaster of a government-aided primary school located in Malda town has been transferred to another school after allegations of corruption.

Manoj Mitra, the headmaster of Government Sponsored Free Primary School (No 1) - the primary wing of Akrurmoni Coronation Institution in Malda - has been asked to handover the charge and join in another primary school on March 27.

Mitra was the headmaster in the school for past six years. There are around 1,100 students and 15 teachers at the school, said sources.

For past few years, complaints were made from various quarters against him that he illegally collects money from guardians for admitting their children at the school.

"The headmaster used to admit students coming from far-flung places against money but students of the locality were denied admission. There was complete anomaly and in case any guardian protested, he would force the guardian even to clean the school compound," said Sonu Shekh, a guardian.

A section of teachers also spoke about the malpractices allegedly carried out by Mitra.

"That he collects additional money for admission was a known fact. He would also misbehave with teachers and would try to create division among us. Also, the quality of education had deteriorated at the school during his tenure. It is good that the council has finally taken some steps against him," a teacher said.

On Saturday, Ashish Kundu, the chairman of DPSC, the district inspector of schools (primary), went to the school.

They spoke to the teachers and guardians, and informed them about the decision that the headmaster has been transferred to another institution.

"For past six years, we have received several complaints against him. We conducted an investigation and had sent the report to state education department. On basis of the direction given by department, we have transferred him another school of the district. On Monday, he will hand over the charge to a senior teacher and on Tuesday he has to join in the new school," said Kundu.

Mitra, the accused headmaster, however, did not turn up at the school on Saturday. He stayed away and could not be contacted even over phone.
