A 19-year-old student died after she was flung out of a car that was hit by a heavy vehicle from behind and landed on her head on the Bypass around 3.45am on Sunday.

Ahana Kar, a student of fashion designing, was sitting in the front passenger seat of a Volkswagen Vento which was being driven by friend Faiz Ahmed Siddique, 25. Four cousins of Faiz were also in the car.

Ahana, a resident of Belghoria, was taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital in a police ambulance. She was declared dead on arrival.

Faiz, a Beckbagan Row resident who runs a call centre in Sector V, has been admitted to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals. "He suffered cerebral haemorrhage and underwent brain surgery. He is on ventilator," a hospital official said.

The four cousins of Faiz - Mohammed Junaid, 25, Abdullah Khan, 23, Yaseer Khan, 22, and Mohammed Sarfaraz, 25, - suffered minor injuries.

Police said the group was returning from a party at a Sector V night club when they met with the accident around 10m from the Salt Lake stadium's VIP gate.

"Faiz's cousins said the car was hit by a heavy vehicle from behind," an officer of Beleghata police station said. "After being hit, the car veered to its right, hit a lamp post on the median divider and dislodged five guard rails before coming to a halt."

While Ahana was flung out of the car under the impact of the crash, the engine got separated from the chassis and skidded for about 50m.

"A blue scratch mark on the car's rear portion suggests the heavy vehicle had grazed its left side," the officer said.

The front of the car was mangled beyond recognition. All its tyres flattened and the glass windows shattered.

"The nature of the accident suggests both vehicles were speeding," the officer said.

"The heavy vehicle could not be identified as there are no CCTV cameras on the 2km stretch between the Broadway and the SAI complex crossings on the Bypass where the accident occurred."

A relative of Ahana said she used to go out every weekend with Faiz, whom she had met on the Facebook a few months ago.

"Ahana's parents had asked her to stay at home on Saturday night," the relative said.

Faiz's mother Rahima Siddiqui said: "Faiz told me they were going to a Chingrighata eatery for dinner."
