New campus and more courses, fundraisers and fun fests - St. Xavier's College is set for an action-packed 2016.

"The St. Xavier's University bill will be tabled soon. We have been waiting to submit the final proposal to the government so that we can put in place some infrastructure by the time the bill is passed. That would allow us to start classes quickly," said Father Felix Raj, the principal of St. Xavier's College.

The university will be set up following a public-private partnership model. The Jesuits will remain at the helm with the chancellor - in this case, the Jesuit provincial - picking the vice-chancellor, said the principal."We did not want to be a private university because government participation would lower the fee structure," Felix Raj added.

The university, to come up in Rajarhat, is expected to be functional by July 2017 and offer MBA and Masters in Social Work along with other undergraduate and postgraduate courses not available at St. Xavier's College.

The institution will start the year with the college's ninth convocation and valedictory session on January 16, the Foundation Day of St. Xavier's.

Next on the cards is Xavotsav, the three-day annual college fest organised by the students' council in association with The Telegraph. Around 10,000 students from across the country will participate in the January 22-24 event.

On January 26, the college grounds will host Asha Bhosle in concert for Beyond Barriers, the annual fundraiser organised by the St. Xavier's College Calcutta Alumni Association, in association with The Telegraph. The proceeds from the concert will go to the college fund.

Also on the calendar is Shishu Mela on February 14 which will bring to the campus over 1,000 children from the villages adopted by St. Xavier's College and Bhasha Divas celebrations with torch rallies from Dhaka to Singapore, Mumbai, Delhi, Asansol, Burdwan, Rajgunj and Calcutta.
