Siliguri, April 26: The court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) in Jalpaiguri has ordered an inquiry into a case of forcible marriage, abortion and expulsion of a 12-year-old girl by her in-laws.
Sampa Dutta Pal, the CJM, directed the Bhaktinagar police yesterday to probe into the allegations levelled by the victim against her husband, in-laws, and some residents of Samarnagar in Salugara, where she stays.
The girl had an affair with Bablu Burman, also a resident of the area, a source said. When some neighbours learnt that she had become pregnant, they forced the girl’s parents to get her married to Bablu in May last year, the source added.
“The family even paid Rs 15,000 and gold for dowry. Within a week, the girl’s in-laws took her to a private nursing home in Siliguri and forced her to have an abortion,” said Rajarshi Bhowmik, a Jalpaiguri court lawyer representing, the girl.
In December, Bhowmik said, the in-laws threw her out of the house. “She went to police for help but to no avail. So, she filed a petition in the court on Tuesday,” the lawyer added.
“The court has asked the police to probe the case, where the number of people accused is 12,” Bhowmik said. The charges include forcible marriage, raping a minor and forcible abortion, the lawyer added.
Four doctors in the town, who worked at the nursing home where the abortion was reportedly carried out, have also been accused of being a party to the crime. None of them could be contacted.
Besides Bhowmik, Sagnik Sikdar and Sreyashi Pal, also lawyers of the Jalpaiguri court, are contesting the case.
