Police on Tuesday asked the Indian Premier League organisers to produce a government or court order authorising them to use loudspeakers at the Eden Gardens during the annual tourney that coincides with two public examinations.
The high court and later the environment department had banned the use of microphones during exams conducted by state or central authorities.
At a meeting with the IPL organisers and the Cricket Association of Bengal, joint commissioner of police, headquarters, Jawed Shamim said a copy of the order would have to be produced before the first IPL match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Delhi Daredevils on April 5.
“This year the IPL roster has coincided with the Higher Secondary and CBSE Class XII examinations. So, the organisers will have to come up with either a no-objection certificate from the environment department or an order from the high court allowing them to use loudspeakers while the exams are on,” said Shamim.
The HS will be on till April 7 and the CBSE till April 16.
At the Lalbazar meeting, IPL was represented by its security in-charge R.K. Das and the CAB by joint secretary Biswarup Dey and treasurer Subir Ganguly.
According to police sources, IPL organisers have plans to use loudspeakers during the eight matches to be played at the Eden between April 5 and May 14.
A glass-covered box is likely to be set up at a “strategic point” in the stadium for police and organisers to keep a watch on the crowd. There will also be watch-towers inside and outside the stadium.
