Central bill on pass-fail return

• PARK STREET: The no-detention policy in schools till Class VIII is likely to be scrapped from 2019, Anil Swarup, secretary, department of school education, human resource development ministry, said on Saturday. The Centre is likely to table a bill in Parliament in the winter session to amend the right to education (RTE) act and reintroduce the pass-fail system. Under the present provision of the RTE act, students are promoted automatically to higher classes till Class VIII.

Water supply

• BEHALA/GARDEN REACH: Water supply to Behala, Siriti, Daspara, Bansdroni, Prafulla Park, Senpally and Gandhi Maidan will remain suspended between 10am on Sunday and Monday morning to facilitate construction of a flyover on Budge Budge Trunk Road.

CID raid

• CHINSURA: A team of CID officers conducted a raid in Hooghly on Friday night and arrested two men - Raju Biswas and Uttam Sarkar - from Chinsura for illegal possession of one country-made single shot and a bullet. A case of possession of illegal arms has been registered with Chinsura police station.

Calcutta University pro-VC

• CALCUTTA: Dipak Kar, who was chosen as the Pro vice-chancellor (academic) of Calcutta University last week, is likely to join the university this month, a university official said on Saturday. Kar, who is currently the chairman of the Bengal college service commission, is overseeing the State Eligibility Test (SET), scheduled on December 3, 2017. Once the examination and the process of submitting scripts are over, he is likely to quit as the chairman of the commission and join CU, the official said. His predecessor Swagata Sen, who quit the post three years before the completion of his tenure, has joined as interim VC of Gour Banga University, Malda.

Ragging inquiry

• COLLEGE STREET: The anti-ragging cell of Calcutta University, tasked to investigate the alleged ragging at the New Law College Hostel, will have to submit its report within a fortnight of November 24. The university syndicate, which met on November 30 and decided on engaging the cell to investigate the charges, has set the deadline. Four first-year students living in the hostel had alleged that senior students had ragged them on November 9.

Woman saved

• BANSDRONI: A 34-year-old woman was saved in the nick of time as she tried to kill herself in her Bansdroni home, police said. Her husband and some of their neighbours broke open the door to her room as she was trying to hang herself from the ceiling fan on Friday, the police said.
