Calcutta, May 16: The CBI has summoned Narada News chief editor Mathew Samuel to its Calcutta office on May 18 for questioning in connection with the payoffs case.

The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the alleged money laundering angle in the case, has also summoned Samuel on the same day. ED sources said the agency had asked Samuel to bring along documents relating to his personal finances, those of the news channel and income tax returns for the past three assessment years.

Samuel is believed to have told the agencies that he was not keeping well and might not be able to make it to Calcutta on May 18.

"We would like Samuel to clarify about the persons he had approached to meet the politicians and the amounts he had handed over in cash to each of the accused," a CBI officer said. "His statements would be taken down in writing. The thrust would be on the cash transactions with public representatives."
