Calcutta, April 19: Trinamul Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay and wife Nayna today surrendered in a Calcutta court and obtained bail following an arrest order issued by the New Market police station.
In the arrest order, New Market police had alleged that Bandyopadhyay and his wife, along with several party supporters, had put up roadblocks at Raja Subodh Mullick Square on March 14, 2007, to protest police firing in Nandigram.
The police said in the arrest order that during the roadblock programme, the Trinamul MP and his supporters had damaged some vehicles, including two buses.
“My client and his wife had no information about such a case. They received the order all of a sudden. They are in no way connected with any such incident,” Amit Kumar, the lawyer appearing for the couple, told the magistrate.
The court then asked the public prosecutor why New Market police did not take any action on the matter for so long.
The public prosecutor said the order was in response to an Election Commission directive to the police on issuing arrest orders in every pending case.
As soon as Bandyopadhyay reached the court with his actress wife, a large number of people gathered at the spot. The police jostled with the crowd and managed to escort the couple to the courtroom.
