Parui, June 13: The Bengal BJP has activated its legal cell to take on the Trinamul Congress in lower courts but many wondered if such a legal challenge would help Narendra Modi's party expand its organisation in Bengal.
An eight-member team from the BJP's legal cell today visited Mahulara, Chattarbandhi, Makhra, Belpata, Choumandalpur and Sattor villages in Birbhum's Parui, which has witnessed repeated clashes between BJP and Trinamul activists since last October. The team members told villagers how to file police complaints against Trinamul supporters for attacks. The team also instructed the villagers on how to file court cases if the police did not take action.
"The legal cell can only fight battles in courts. But courts cannot help build strong organisations. For that, we have to be active on the field," a state BJP leader said.
BJP MLA Samik Bhattacharya said the party had decided to take legal steps to provide security to its workers.
According to the BJP, as many as 239 cases have been filed in Parui against 2,930 party workers. The cases pertain to murder, attempt to murder, carrying arms and explosives and causing violence.
"Cases take years to settle. Unless it is backed by a series of agitations and movements at the ground level, the step would have no impact," a BJP source said.
