Garden Reach: The motorcyclist and his daughter who were killed when a lorry hit the two-wheeler on Garden Reach Road on Monday night were without helmets at the time of the accident, police said on Tuesday.

Afroz Ali's wife Nigah Sultana, 38, who has been admitted to a private hospital with injuries was without a helmet as well, a traffic police officer said. "None of them had helmets. We have been telling people about the advantages of wearing a helmet," the officer said.

"But unfortunately some people do not find it important enough to protect their heads and end up paying with their lives or limbs."

After the accident around 10.45pm on Monday, residents of the area stopped the lorry and damaged it while the driver managed to flee, the police said.

They smashed the windscreens and windows of at least nine buses parked along Garden Reach Road, the police said. A police contingent brought the situation under control by 11.30pm. Eight people were arrested on the spot in connection with the rampage.

Ali, 40, and their daughter Monah Ali, 3, were declared dead at SSKM Hospital. His wife was later shifted to a private hospital.
