Passengers panicked and Metro services were thrown off gear on Thursday afternoon after a Kavi Subhash-bound train overshot the signal and the platform at Gitanjali (Naktala) station following a snag in the brakes.

Officials could not recall an incident of an entire Metro train overshooting the platform.

The AC rake No. 3, which arrived at the station around 4pm, overshot the platform by 175 metres. “All eight coaches of the train went out of the platform. It was reversed to the station, allowing the passengers to disembark. The train was then sent to the maintenance yard,” said an official.

Metro general manager P. B. Murty has ordered a probe into the incident.

“Apparently, the train’s brakes didn’t function properly and so it passed the platform. But a detailed probe will reveal the exact cause,” the official said.

No train plied between Tollygunge and Kavi Subhash (New Garia) till 5.24pm. The ripple effect was felt in the Dum Dum-Tollygunge section. The six-minute frequency couldn’t be maintained, said sources.

Services limped back to normal late in the evening.

nDisrupted: The train service in the Sealdah (Main) division was disrupted for around one-and-a-half hours on Thursday evening after branches of a tree fell on the overhead wires between Ichhapur and Palta during a storm around 6pm.

nLabourer dead: Sarad Mondal, 55, a labourer, died after a portion of a building under construction on Bechu Chatterjee Street in north Calcutta collapsed on Thursday evening. Police said Mondal was working near the wall when it fell on him.
