With indoor pollution levels rising across Indian cities, air purifiers have quietly become a household staple. Dyson’s latest entry, the HushJet Purifier Compact, takes a different approach — it’s engineered, as the name suggests, to be extraordinarily quiet. The star-shaped nozzle at its core is what makes this possible, breaking up airflow in a way that dramatically cuts down noise without sacrificing performance.
Being one of Dyson’s most compact purifiers, it is built for smaller spaces — bedrooms, study nooks, home offices. Inside that cylinder sits a two-stage filtration system: a 360-degree electrostatic filter that captures airborne particles, and a separate activated carbon filter that tackles odours and gases.
Like the rest of the Dyson range, it connects to the MyDyson app and works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. What it doesn’t do — and this is worth flagging early — is double up as a fan or a heater. Unlike models in the TP and HP lineups, this one purifies and nothing else.
The name HushJet comes from its jet-propulsion-inspired design. It moves a remarkable volume of air at speed, yet stays whisper-quiet doing it. Think of it as a jet engine that forgot to be loud.
Small machine, serious filtration
Setup is straightforward. If the app doesn’t interest you, skip it entirely — the machine works perfectly well as a plug-and-play device. If you do want the extra layer of information, the MyDyson app takes about three to four minutes to configure and shows you filter life, real-time air quality readings, and outdoor pollution levels as well. Dyson recommends replacing the electrostatic filter every five years, though in a city like Calcutta, four years is a more realistic estimate given the pollution levels.
The body is compact enough to slot into any corner of a room, and the finish is good enough that you might not immediately clock it as plastic. At the centre of the device sits a small LED screen displaying a coloured line — green, yellow, or red — depending on current air quality. When we switched it on for the first time, the line sat firmly in the red. Within 20 to 25 minutes, it had moved to green. That’s faster than most purifiers we’ve tested.
The machine draws in roughly 70 litres of air per second through its 360-degree base and jets the cleaned air upward towards the ceiling. This is smarter than it sounds — pushing air upward means the purifier is circulating the entire room rather than repeatedly cleaning the same pocket of air around itself.
Quiet enough to forget it’s there
At maximum purification, the HushJet runs at 41dB. At sleep mode, it drops to 24dB. To put that in perspective, it won’t compete with your television, and it certainly won’t wake you. In a month of testing in a damp, dusty old house — the kind where you sneeze before the kettle’s boiled — the difference was noticeable. Sleep improved, the sneezing stopped, and the air simply felt cleaner.
Filter replacement, when it eventually comes around, takes a couple of minutes. The outer 360-degree filter and the inner activated carbon layer together claim to capture 99.97 per cent of particles as small as 0.3 microns — fine dust, pet dander, traffic pollution, mould, and allergens among them. The carbon layer handles odours. We tested this in the kitchen after a dinner of chilli chicken and chowmein, and the smell of fried onions cleared out noticeably faster than usual.
The simplest way to use it is auto mode. Leave it on, and the sensors handle everything — monitoring PM2.5 and PM10 levels, nitrogen dioxide, and pollen, adjusting fan speed as needed. Spray some hairspray across the room and you’ll watch the machine quietly pick up the pace before settling back down.
The price is what you’d expect from Dyson — a premium, and an unapologetic one. But for anyone who shares a bedroom with dust, pet hair, or a city’s worth of pollution drifting through the windows, the HushJet Purifier Compact makes a genuinely strong case for itself.
