Dev Entertainment Ventures dropped the trailer of the upcoming Dev-Subhashree Ganguly starrer Dhumketu, bringing an end to weeks of feverish anticipation and excitement by fans. Having already captured the attention of the audience for reuniting this hit romantic screen pair after nearly a decade, the trailer has raised fresh expectations about the film, which promises to be a complete package of romance, action and intrigue.
As divulged by its teaser and song releases, Dhumketu narrates the saga of Bhanu (Dev), a soldier, who returns under cover to his hometown after nine years, to prove that he had been wrongfully indicted for treason. The trailer builds upon this information and provides more clues as to the plot of the film, but without giving away its story and heightening suspense instead.
Composed of a tightly-knit, fast-paced and perhaps random sequence of events, the three-minute-long trailer indicates that Bhanu is falsely implicated in a war crime after a failed military mission and sentenced to death. Though he manages to escape the gallows, his family, consisting of his elderly parents (Dulal Lahiri and Alokananda Roy) and his wife Rupa (Subhashree), gives him up for dead and mourns his loss. Bhanu goes incognito and comes back disguised as an old man, identifying himself as Indranath Khasnobis to a character played by Parambrata Chattopadhyay. Rudranil Ghosh’s character, who is able to identify him, is shocked to see him back from the dead. It is also indicated that he may be one of those who know that Bhanu is innocent.
In all probability, Dhumketu will be a compelling narrative of how Bhanu lays bare the truth of his life, is able to prove his loyalty to his country and also be reunited with his family.
The trailer underlines Dev’s versatility and range as an actor, impressing in all his scenes as an action hero (both as a brave young soldier and as a wronged man seeking payback), as a romantic hero, and also in disguise as an old man. Subhashree lights up the screen with her romantic scenes with Dev, their on-screen chemistry being a major attraction that is expected to pull audiences to the theatres. She looks radiant as the beautiful bride or the happily-married wife, adding depth and dimension to her character as Bhanu’s heartbroken widow.
The gripping trailer hints that Dhumketu will explore the clash of incompatible ideologies with its focus on a strong, patriotic element. Romance, honour, love for the country, loyalty, treachery, redemption and punishment are some of the key ideas discussed in the film, whose music serves as its anchor, defining emotions and creating impactful moments. The snippet of Anupam Roy’s poignant song Hobe na dekha and Indraadip Dasgupta’s evocative background score elevate the experience of the trailer, generating the perfect ambience, mood and atmosphere in every scene. Spectacular shots of a Himalayan avalanche, some beautiful scenes of Nainital’s lake and hills and some heart-stopping action sequences are clear indicators of Dhumketu’s brilliant cinematography, adding greatly to the energy, excitement and charm of the film.
Expected to be one of the film’s pivotal characters, Chiranjit Chakraborty also makes a brief appearance in the trailer, apparently essaying the role of a senior military man. Written and directed by Kaushik Ganguly, Dhumketu releases in cinemas on August 14.
