The Kharasrota river in the district is also rising rapidly as a result of the cyclonic storm-induced rain.

Heavy rain has lashed across the district for the past three days. The district recorded an average rainfall of 138mm in the past 24 hours, officials sources said.

The rain has added to the waterlogging woes at many areas across the district. Even though the intensity of rain reduced considerably on Saturday, there was no end to the misery of people because of the acute waterlogging conditions.

The district administration has asked villagers in the low-lying areas to stay alert.

The district authorities on Saturday directed the block officials to be on alert and not leave their respective headquarters without informing the district collector.

Heavy downpour under the impact of cyclone Daye for the past three days has led to floods in the district with water level in the Baitarani river rapidly rising.

The Baitarani river was flowing above the danger mark at various places on Saturday.

Many villagers in Dasarathapur, Korei and Jajpur blocks in the district living alongside the Baitarani and its branch Kani river, are in a state of panic as water level in these rivers has been rising rapidly following the cyclone-induced incessant rain.

“We are scared as the Baitarani and its branch river Kani are flowing much above the danger level and still rising,” said Bhagabat Prasad Das, a local resident of Duduranta at Dasarathapur in Jajpur.

“As we are living in the low-lying areas and near the river, we do not know what will happen to us,” Das said.

Floodwater from the Baitarani gushed into five villages of Dasarathapur block this evening. Large tracts of farmland of many villages were inundated while water entered a number of houses.
