Dibrugarh: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday laid the foundation stone of Moitri scheme at Dibrugarh police station here.

The mission will provide overall improvement of the police station, re-dedicating the force to the service of people, creating people-friendly environment with a modern scientific human approach.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said 346 police stations would be covered under the scheme for which Rs 125 crore has been earmarked.

"The government has shortlisted 73 police stations in the state to be made more citizen-friendly in the first phase of the Mission of Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image (Moitri) scheme," Sonowal said.

"Dibrugarh police station has got a new lease of life under the Moitri scheme. As it is one of the historical police stations of Assam, we have to preserve it," he said, adding that the scheme will provide faster service to the people through digitalisation.

"The police stations to be covered under the scheme will have facilities like a reception and waiting lounge, video-conference system, separate cells and entrances for women and children, toilets, adequate drinking water and boundary wall, among others," Sonowal said.

Director-general of police Mukesh Sahay said the scheme has taken off under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal.

"Our main aim is to create a good atmosphere in the police station and bridge the gap between people and the police," he said.
