Kokrajhar, Jan. 29: The All Assam Tribal Sangha has demanded proper implementation of Chapter X of the Assam Land and Revenue (Regulation) Act, 1886, and immediate eviction of illegal settlers from protected belts and blocks.

It also demanded that the land policy of Assam be comprehensively reviewed after consultation with it and sought the declaration of a new tribal land policy in Assam.

A daylong state-level workshop on Implementation of Chapter X of the Assam LR(R) Act 1886 and Implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Right) Act 2006 was held in Guwahati yesterday.

"The Sangha will demand issuance of land deeds to tribal forest dwellers according to the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Right) Act 2006," said a statement by Milon Sonowal and Aditya Khakhlari, the president and the general secretary of the organisation.

The organisation will demand restoration of all the lost tribal land to the legal owners according to the U.N. Dhebor Commission Report 1960 and for immediate survey of land of tribal belts and blocks.

It also adopted a resolution to demand inclusion of one representative each from the organisation in all the district and sub-divisional-level land advisory committees of Assam, creation of new tribal belts and blocks covering tribal-populated areas and creation of a new "tribal sub-plan" covering tribal-populated revenue villages.

The workshop, presided over by Sonowal, was inaugurated by AASU's chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharjya.
