Aizawl: In a landmark development, the BJP will form the government in the Chakma Autonomous District Council in Mizoram with support from the six elected Congress members who have formed the United Legislature Party (ULP).

State BJP general secretary Vanlalhmuaka told reporters here on Wednesday, "This is a historic event for the BJP in the political history of Mizoram, as the first BJP-led government will be formed in the state."

He, however, stressed that the council would have a BJP-led government supported by United Legislature Party (ULP) and not a BJP-Congress coalition as the elected Congress members had "left their party identity" and formed the ULP to support the BJP government.

The six elected Congress members had, however, said last week that they were forming the ULP with the BJP and had pledged unconditional support to the BJP-led government.

The announcement of the formation of the BJP-ULP government came within a few hours of governor Lt Gen. (retd) Nirbhay Sharma giving final approval to the BJP Legislature Party.

State BJP vice-president Judy Zodingliani said the governor had also given approval to BJP leader Santi Jiban Chakma being the chief executive member (CEM) of the council.

The new council members will be sworn in on Friday at Chawngte or Kamalanagar, the council's headquarters in Lawngtlai district.

Deputy commissioner N. Chakhai will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new CEM and 10 other members.

Election to the council was held on April 20.

Polls result on April 24 threw up a hung House. The BJP bagged five seats, the Congress six and the Mizo National Front (MNF) emerged the single largest party with eight seats.

Election to one seat was stayed by Gauhati High Court.

The 24-member council has 20 elected members while four members are nominated by the government.

The council was formed under the Sixth Schedule in 1972 to provide greater autonomy to ethnic Chakma people living in south-west Mizoram, bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar.
