Residents of Morabadi on Sunday undertook road repairing work after failing to elicit any positive response from the civic body.

Organised under the aegis of Morabadi Vikas Samiti, 20 residents equipped with axes and spades took to the streets to fill up potholes with building materials, broken bricks and soil dumped on the roadside.

From 8am to 10am, as many as nine potholes on the 1.5km stretch between Antu Chowk and Green Park Colony of the locality had been filled up.

Namkeen dealer Rakesh Kumar Singh, who was in the group, said the initiative was aimed at drawing the attention of the authorities to the problems that the residents had to face daily.

“There are numerous potholes on the roads in the locality, but the civic authority is not paying any attention. Every day, 2-3 accidents take place because of the craters, but there is no one to fill them up. We made several attempts to get the work done by the civic authorities, but did not get any result and therefore decided to do it ourselves,” Singh said.

Birendra Khalkho, who runs a shop of dairy products, said he took part in the repair to create awareness.

“People have the tendency to depend on the government for every work. The government, in turn, keeps on delaying it citing various reasons. We decided to repair the work till the government agencies offer a permanent solution,” Khalkho said.

Morabadi falls under ward 3 of Ranchi Municipal Corporation.

Councillor Basanti Lakra said a road project for the locality had already been finalised and would be undertaken once the drain construction work was over.

“I understand that the residents are facing problems and have taken a proper initiative. The road construction project got delayed because drain construction has to be undertaken first. I had promised them help, but they did not wait for me and undertook the work themselves,” Lakra said.

Ashok Kumar Dwivedi, a local social worker, said the residents had decided to continue the work next Sunday as well.

“They have also decided to set up a speed breaker to prevent rash driving in the locality,” he added.
