Calcutta: Jose Ramirez Barreto was pleasantly surprised with the Confederations Cup result. He had predicted a Brazil victory, but didn’t expect his home country to run Spain ragged like the way the Neymars did at the Maracana, on Sunday.
“It came as a big surprise for me to see Brazil winning by such a margin… I didn’t expect them to dominate the game. But they had done their homework well… They played with a purpose and they deserved to be the champions,” the Brazilian said on Monday.
If the Selecao’s win had thrilled him, he missed being at the Maracana. “I wish I were at the Maracana… I missed being at the stadium,” said Barreto.
Having missed the ‘Super Sunday’, he hoped Brazil would go all the way in the 2014 World Cup and he would be there cheering for the Samba Boys.
“Winning the World Cup will be special… If they reach the final, I will definitely be at the Maracana,” said Barreto.
Barreto credited Luiz Phil Scolari and Neymar for the side’s impressive performance. “Neymar is a star … After Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, we needed someone who can carry the burden of expectations happily. Neymar seems to fit in the role perfectly. The way he has handled the pressure so far shows that he is extremely mature.
“But I think Scolari is the man behind the success… It is a new team and a new set-up and he has united them quite wonderfully… He does seem to have a magic wand. We all expect him to do what he did in 2002,” said Barreto. While Barreto remained optimistic, Bhaichung Bhutia believes that Brazil will be a major threat in 2014 Cup.
“They are back… The players have gelled well and they have performed in unison… If they can perform at the same level, they will pose a huge threat in the World Cup.”Bhutia’s one time teammate Rennedy Singh has become a fan of Neymar.
“I have become a huge fan of Neymar… He is a solid striker… He stays cool and leads the attack quite brilliantly,” said Rennedy.
