Birmingham: India tasted their first victory in the singles event of the world badminton championships when Trupti Murgunde defeated Spain’s Dolores Marco won 9-11, 11-4, 11-9 to move into Round II on Tuesday. In the next round she will take on Kaori Mori of Japan, who stunned 15th seeded Kelly Morgan of Wales 11-7, 13-12.
Earlier, V. Diju and Thomas Sanave lost in the doubles first round to Thailand’s Patapol Ngernsrisuk and Sudket Prapkamol 13-15, 12-15.
On Monday, Peter Gade, runner-up for the men’s world title two years ago, lost in the first round to Indonesian sixth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro 11-15, 6-15.
The Indian women’s pair of Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian defeated Sweden’s Johanna Persson and Elin Bergblom 17-16, 15-6 in Round I. However, in men’s singles, national champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta was trounced by third seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia 7-15, 5-15. In men’s doubles, Jaseel P. Ismail and Jaison Xavier lost to ninth seeds Keita Masuda and Tadashi Ohtsuka of Japan 7-15, 5-15. (Agencies)
