Calcutta: The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) refuses to learn from its mistakes.
It was only last year that they had to move the knockout rounds of their league and the Knockout final to Chennai due to the monsoons, which rendered the grounds in the city unplayable.
On Tuesday, the association had to face the same problem again when the P. Sen Memorial Invitational Tournament final between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan was washed out at the Eden.
East Bengal ended their innings on 276 for five in their stipulated 40 overs when rain interrupted proceedings. After 15 minutes of rain, the ground was rendered unplayable as the outfield was completely water-logged.
The groundsmen, who were very few in numbers as most of them went to have lunch, also took time to cover the pitch. Under such a scenario, both the umpires decided that even 15 overs of further play was not possible. The only option left to ascertain a winner was a bowl out. But both the captains decided against a bowl out.
“I think if the groundsmen could have been a little more pro-active, we could have had a match of at least 15 overs. I think we were in a very good position to win the match. If we had gone for a bowl out, we might have lost the tie. So we did not want a bowl out,” East Bengal captain Arnab Nandi said.
The sequence of events thus put the tournament in a limbo. CAB’s joint secretary Sujan Mukherjee refused to admit that it was the fault of the association that they could not conduct the final in time. “The tournament committee will now take a decision on Thursday, after getting the umpires’ report, in order to ascertain a winner.,” Mukherjee said.
