Calcutta, May 27 :
Seventh seed Arpit Sharma upset top seed Arup Mallick 6-3, 6-2 to enter the boys? under-12 semi-finals of the Britannia junior tennis tournament, being played at Ordnance Club.
In the boys? under-16 category, top seed Sourav Sukul breezed past eighth seed Rijit Chatterjee 6-1, 6-0 to enter the last-four stage. Fourth seed Subhoditya Nath too made it to the semi-finals, defeating seventh seed Santu Ganguly 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
Samrat Ghosh, the top seed in the boys? under-14 group, reached the semi-finals, overcoming sixth seed Bapi Halder 6-0, 7-5. Second seed Farid Alam was stretched by fourth seed Sk Akbar, but Alam prevailed 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Qualifier reaches final
For qualifier Rishi Chaturvedi of Bengal, the dream run in the Adidas junior tennis circuit, being played at the South Club, continued as he reached the final today, overcoming Rupesh Roy 6-2, 6-1. He will take on Sanjib Mohan, the fourth seed from Assam, who beat second seed Anshuman Dutta 6-3, 6-4.
In girls under-14. top seed Priyanka Parekh of Bengal will clash in the final with Manjusha Kantha Rao of AP. Priyanka beat Sharmistha Chowdhury 6-2, 6-1, while Manjusha defeated Jharna Mansi 2/6, 6-3, 6-2.
Priyanka will also feature in the girls? under-16 final, where she will take on Jharna. Priyanka, top seed in this category too, beat Soma Banerjee 6-0, 6-2, while Jharna, seeded second, defeated Sukirti Patnaik 6-3, 6-0.
In boys? under-16, Harshit Sharma (top seed) beat Ridhiman Dutta 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, while Vinod Kumar Sewa bt Manoj Kumar Sewa 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 to enter the final.
Matches abandoned
The third division CFL match between Greer and Garalgacha, at Bhowanipur ground, was abandoned as an assistant referee was absent. In the fifth division, Milan Chakra did not turn up for their match against Calcutta United Club at Rajasthan ground.
Age-group aquatics
The opening day of the state age-group aquatic meet, held at Subhas Sarovar, saw two meet records being bettered.
In the girls? group I 200m butterfly event, Putul Nandy of North 24 Parganas, clocked 3:05.38 seconds to improve upon Chaitali Ghosh?s mark of 3:06.16 set in 1997.
In the boys? group I 100m butterfly, Akbar Ali Mir of South 24-Parganas set a new mark of 1:02.11 overshadowing Sunil Mondal?s 1:03.03 set in 1998.
