Calcutta: Heavy rain played havoc as Mohun Bagan's CFL's Premier Division match against Aryan was called off, at the Barasat Stadium, on Monday.

It was raining since the kick off, but 20 minutes into the first half, it became torrential.

After the mandatory 30-minute stoppage, referee Ranjit Bakshi and his team did an inspection and called off the match.

More than the waterlogged pitch, what worried the referee was the bloated turf.

"The ball was not rolling and the turf was bloated. We had no other option but to call off the game," match commissioner Hari Sadhan Bose said.

This is the third match of the ongoing CFL which has been abandoned due to rain. Aryan's match against Mohammedan Sporting at the Mohammedan Sporting ground was called off due to rain. Also, Tollygunge Agragami's tie against Police AC was abandoned.

The latest abandonment will surely give the IFA officials more sleepless nights since fitting in these three matches in the punishing fixture will be a problem.

Mohun Bagan coach Sanjay Sen was not a happy man. "We wanted two full matches before the September 6 Derby. Now we have the match against Police AC on Thursday. Hopefully, weather will be perfect that day," Sen said.

Aryan coach Rajdeep Nandy said they could have been 2-0 up by the first quarter.

"Sumit Ghosh should have converted those chances," Nandy rued.

Coach Sen had given a start to Bagan's Gustavo Silva, who didn't look much comfortable.
