London: Second seeds Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond of the US defeated Leander Paes and Elena Vesnina 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to clinch the mixed doubles title of the Wimbledon, here, on Sunday.

The Indo-Russian pair of Paes and Vesnina, who stunned top seeds Bob Bryan and Liezel Huber to enter the final on Saturday, fought back hard to seal the second set 7-5 in their favour after losing the first set quite easily.

Paes and Vesnina lost the first two games in the deciding final set but came back strongly to level the scores 2-2 after winning the third and fourth games respectively.

Paes and Vesnina kept their good show as they won the fifth game to lead 3-2 in the final set.

On the other hand the experienced duo of Mike and Lisa won the next three games to lead 5-3 in the decider. Mike-Lisa lost the ninth game but finally claimed the title by winning the final set 6-4.

It was the second Grand Slam final of the season for Paes and Vesnina as they had reached the final of the Australian Open. But they had ended runners-up to Bethanie Mattek-Sands Horia Tecau.

At the same tournament Paes had completed his career Slam by winning the men’s doubles trophy with Radek Stepanek.

On Saturday, Serena Williams capped off yet another successful day at Wimbledon for America’s premier tennis family as she followed up her singles triumph by winning the doubles title with sister Venus on Saturday.

Six and a half hours after lifting the Venus Rosewater Dish for the fifth time, Serena teamed up with her 32-year-old sibling to down Czech sixth seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-5, 6-4.

Venus, a first-round loser in singles, fired an ace to complete the 78-minute victory on a floodlit arena just 10 minutes before the 11pm cut-off time for Centre Court play.

It was a fifth All England Club doubles title for the duo, and 13th overall.

After watching Serena, 30, win her three-set battle against Agnieszka Radwanska in the singles, Venus was delighted to play an active role on court and at one point produced a stunning volley despite falling on to her bottom.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Marray became the first home player since 1936 to win the men’s doubles title with Danish partner Frederik Nielsen.

Wildcards Marray and Nielsen sent the Centre Court crowd into a frenzy as they kept their wits to down fifth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau.

The British-Danish pair won an exhilarating final 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 after Nielsen thumped a backhand volley winner to spark joyous scenes at the All-England Club.

Remarkably it was Marray and Nielsen’s first title together and they had done it the hard way having also beaten American second seeds and twice champions Bob and Mike Bryan in the semi-finals.

“We can’t believe it, it’s tough to sink in. It’s amazing,” Marray said moments after going up into the Royal Box to lift the trophy.
