Guwahati, July 3:
Title favourites Gurumayum Inao Sharma, N. Shashank Singh, Trailokya Nanda, Raju Loukrakram and Abhinav Baura were among other 40 players who registered facile victories over their rivals in the opening round of The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship at the ABITA indoor stadium here today.
Dark horse Durlov Nanda of Edith Douglas School, Jorhat, playing with white, shocked third seed Nandan Buragohain of Nazira Higher Secondary School, Sibsagar, in 42 moves in the Pirc defence. The first round witnessed only three draws, while as many as 22 players got walkovers.
Gurumayum of Imphal's MKSMT High School got the better of Debajit Phukan of St. Stephen's School in 11 moves in the Alekhine's defence. Similarly, Nayanmoni Talukdar of local Maharishi Vidya Mandir went down to Meghnath Rabha of the city's Phaguna Rabha High School in six moves of an irregular opening. Both lost their games due to the kingside diagonal weakness created by unwarranted pawn pushes in the beginning.
Shashank of Nichol's High School accounted for Arnab Mishra of BRPL Vidyalaya, Dhaligaon, in 46 moves of the out-of-fashion Phildor's defence, while Trailokya of Edith Douglas School, Jorhat, defeated Arunav Banerjee of Shillong's All Saint's School.
Earlier, inaugurating the meet, SAI regional sub-centre director-in-charge Harakanta Borgohain hoped that such mass participation of school children in the event would go a long way towards inculcating among the youngsters the interest in the game of chess.
