As soon as Yashasvi Jaiswal pushed Joe Root through the cover region to bring up his second double hundred of the series on Sunday, an elated Sarfaraz Khan too held his bat up as they crossed for the single. These youngsters do seem to be enjoying each other’s success.

The likes of captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aren’t getting any younger. Big shoes need to be filled in once they retire after a few years. The progress these youngsters are making bodes really well for India going forward.

The flamboyant Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, who was unfortunate to miss out on a hundred after a miscommunication led to his run out, and even debutant Sarfaraz are heading in the right direction.

Agreed, this England bowling attack, lacking in experience particularly in the spin department, is weak. Barring the 41-year-old James Anderson, their quicks too haven't had any Test-match experience in India in the past. Yet, what the likes of Jaiswal have been able to achieve in this game assumes a lot of significance. They batted with authority, looked to dominate right through and were solid in defence as well.

Credit has to be given to Gill as well for stitching a crucial 155-run stand with Jaiswal after India lost Rohit early in their second innings on Day III.

"Shubman is already a seasoned campaigner, having played 23 Tests. As for Sarfaraz, we need to see him in a few more Test matches. But Jaiswal definitely has the ingredients to be the next superstar. He's proving to be an all-format player.

"What's most pleasing is how well these guys have cashed in on the opportunities they got," former chief selector MSK Prasad told The Telegraph. "The opportunities came knocking at their door just ahead of the transition period for Indian cricket, and it was really good to see these players grabbing the chances with both hands."

Skipper Rohit, too, hailed the efforts of these young cricketers. "We've had to work really hard to win, especially with a lot of our frontline players missing. So, a lot of credit to these young boys who have come in and showed a lot of character... Looks like they actually belong here and they want to stay here as well.

"We always talk about the bench strength. Today, and also in Visakhapatnam, we got to see a lot of our bench strength," Rohit said at the news conference.

Giving the freedom to Sarfaraz to bat in his own style also helped the 26-year-old. "I didn't discuss any plan as such with him. Usko agar khula chhodoge, toh kaam kar dega apnaa (He will do his job if you don't curb his natural game)," Rohit stated.

When the captain has such faith in his young generals, one assumes all is well.
