Calcutta: Four-time national badminton champion Chetan Anand has taken first steps towards realising his dream. The dream of making an Olympic champion.
"I started an academy two years back. It's not as big as Pullela Gopichand's... Mine is still at a nascent stage," the former world No. 10 said at the SAI Indoor Stadium on Thursday.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist in mixed doubles is in town for the Bishnupriya Kundu Memorial All India Senior Doubles Ranking Tournament.
"Right now my focus is on the academy. We generally train under-13 and under-15 players and I have plans to expand," Chetan said.
According to Chetan, badminton is big in India right now because of Saina Nehwal. "Agreed that Gopi, myself, Jwala (Gutta), V Diju had successes in international tournaments, but if you point to one particular reason which saw the game being taken as a profession, it's Saina's ascent," Chetan said.
And what about PV Sindhu? "Well, I think she will win another medal in Tokyo (Olympics). Age is on her side. She is in good form and I do not see any reason why she cannot win another Olympic medal," he said.
Sindhu for the record will be 22 this July.
