Thirty teams will take part in the Indian Oil 104th Beighton Cup hockey tournament, to be held in the city from April 1 to 15.
Only one foreign club ? the City Club, Lahore ? will be seen in action, with the Dhaka Club team opting out at the last minute, Gurbux Singh, Bengal Hockey Association secretary, said today.
Sixteen local and 15 outstation teams, including defending champions Border Security Force, are taking part. Punjab Police, Punjab and Sind Bank, the Lahore team and BSF have been seeded to play the quarter-final league directly.
The local challenge will be spearheaded by Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, CESC, BNR and ERSA.
The semi-finals and the final will be telecast live on Doordarshan.
Ticket to World Cup
For city lad Samrat Dutta, a B.Sc student, a dream has come true. He has won one of the 100 World Cup tickets that Britannia Industries are offering as prizes.
The scheme has really taken off, the company representatives said at a press conference today. Apart from the 100 super prizes, the consumers can have 100 colour TVs, 1000 cricket bats autographed by Robin Singh, 10,000 World Cup watches and other sundry items.
Apart from that the booklets, available in exchange for 100 runs worth biscuit wrappers, are by themselves a storehouse of information regarding World Cup cricket. There are nine such booklets, out of which six are already in the market.
Twenty-five lucky ones have already won the tickets.
