3 UPSETS ON DAY 2

Jamshedpur, June 22 :    Jamshedpur, June 22:  On a day of upsets, fourth seed Satish Kumar of Guru Nanak High School was shocked by Ankit Amartya in the third round of The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship here at JRD Tata Complex today. Satish won positional advantage and was maintaining a winning position with white pieces till the middlegame. But he awfully mishandled his moves towards the end and finally ended up on the wrong end of the stick after 34 moves. Seventh seed Anirban Pati and tenth-seeded Varun Anant also suffered setbacks. Anirban enjoyed some advantages against Soubhik Bhattacharya in exchange of Slav defence before blundering on the 21st move where he lost his knight at d5. Anirban went under time pressure and subsequently resigned. Varun, on the other hand, allowed Himanshu Sekhar Sharma to equalise easily in the Sicilian Taimanov. Himanshu, a Town School student of Munger, got the thematic d5 break and got slight edge in the rook ending after exchange of heavy pieces where Varun blundered and lost in 23 moves. Other seeded players, however, had it easy Earlier, in the second round played in the morning, the form-book held true. Top seed Pratik Sengupta, with white, checkmated Rhythm Das in just seven moves in the second round. Pratik went on to win his next match against Sovan Pramanik, too. On the second board, Rohan Vijay Shandilya had no problem in exploiting Asif Alam's planless play to win in 30 moves. The other Fide-rated player, Abhishek Das, too won comfortably against Gurpreet Singh.
