Bhubaneswar, July 6: The Mahila Police today arrested a youth from Bhadrak for allegedly trying to outrage the modesty of a girl and threatening to kill her.

The girl’s family members alleged that he was deliberately trying to abort the marriage proposals of the girl and issuing threats to both her family and the families from where she got proposals.

The youth identified as 33-year-old Abdul Rehman ,who was arrested under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 294 (obscene acts and songs) of the Indian Penal Code, was today sent to the Jharpada special jail after his bail plea was rejected by a local court here.

According to the family members of the 23-year-old girl, the youth’s sister and the girl were studying in the same college. They used to visit each other’s house where the youth came to know the girl.

“His family members sent Rehman’s proposal for our daughter, but we rejected it. It had happened eight months ago but he had been harassing us since then,” said Sajid Ali Khan, brother of the girl.

According to Sajid, the girl’s marriage was fixed with a doctor in Cuttack and the date was June 19. On June 17 while she was shopping for her wedding, the youth followed her to the market and tried to outrage her modesty.

“My sister lodged a complaint with the Mahila police following which the police registered a case,” said Sajid.

However, he had fled the city. The police said that they had been looking for the accused for last 15 and finally traced him in Bhadrak.
