Bhubaneswar, Aug. 28: Youngsters broke free and went crazy on the dance floor at a workshop conducted by street dancer Prosenjit Guy Kundu in the city.
At the 10-day workshop that concluded here today, youngsters were introduced to old school styles - hip-hop and house, the two most popular forms of street dance.
Born in France, Prosenjit moved to India in 2005 and has been conducting workshops and imparting lessons on street styles across the country since then. He feels that street dance form has come a long way in the past 10 years.
"When I started, very few people practiced this form, while it was already popular in the West. I travelled to various cities like a nomad teaching young dancers in various street dance styles. The culture gradually picked up and at present, the dance form is greatly practiced," said Prosenjit, who was a judge at Footloose, a street dance television show.
More than 150 dancers from various parts of the city and nearby areas attended the workshop. The youngsters belonged to diverse backgrounds including school and college students and IT professionals.
The workshop was hosted by city-based dance institute Free Soul Dance Conservatory and focused on acquainting dancers with hand and leg movements apart from ways to use the floor. The moves involve a lot of legwork, waist isolations and shoulder shimmies.
Donning large T-shirts, droopy jeans and scarves covering half their faces, the dancers looked typical street dancers. For them, the experience was quite enriching.
Sandeep Bisoyi, a participant, said: "There is a lot of scope to learn traditional dance forms in Odisha, but we seldom get to be trained in international dance forms here. It was great to learn from experts in the field."
