Cuttack, Jan. 1: Tension prevails at Samal Sahi after three persons were injured in firing by a youth during New Year celebrations in Sadar police limits last night.

Sources said the incident occurred around 9.30pm yesterday during a community feast at Samal Sahi that a group of local youths had organised.

Akanu alias Akash Sahu, 31, the prime accused, opened fire during the community function because of a dispute.

Police said that initially there was a tussle between Akash and other local youths. Later, Akash along with three of his friends arrived at the spot and fired indiscriminately injuring three persons, including a minor. The injured have been identified as Rabindra Samal, Sharmila Samal and Sarita Samal. All the three injured were taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition. However, their condition is now said to be stable.

“I was returning home when I saw a group of people arguing with each other. Suddenly, two youths fired and a bullet hit my left thigh,” said Rabindra, an injured. He said Akash had fired after a verbal fight with another youth of the same locality.

Though raids were conducted by a special police team, Akash managed to flee, a senior official said. A sharp weapon has been found from the spot while the accused managed to escape via Kathajodi river embankment.

“It is unfortunate that despite the presence of police, the key accused managed to escape” said Ramakant Samal, a local resident.

The cops said a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against Akash and efforts were on to nab him.

“The accused is a drug addict and we are trying to ascertain his criminal antecedents. Efforts are on to nab the prime accused and others involved in the firing,” said assistant commissioner of police Nimai Sethi.
