Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday felicitated bikers from the Border Security Force's women's contingent who performed stunts during this year's Republic Day parade in New Delhi.
Six Odias were part of the team that replaced their male counterparts this year. Mita Hansda, Banita Das, Rasmita Das, Krishna Gartia, Anushaya Samal and Subanti impressed everyone with daredevil acts on Royal Enfield motorcycles.
"Glad to meet inspirational daughters of Odisha who made history as part of Seema Bhawani, 1st all-women @BSF_India bikers team that bedazzled Nation on #RepublicDay," Naveen tweeted.
Calling the women role models, he wrote: "They are role models for all & example that girls are less to none in courage & tenacity. Wished them all success."
BSF trainers chose the squad members, aged between 25 and 30, from various combat ranks. The team showcased its skills with daredevil stunts like fish riding, side riding, faulaad, prachand baalay shaktiman, and bull fighting.
Hansda said she was initially frightened, but the experience was exciting.
"We required a lot of coordination and determination. We stood by each other and are happy that it came out well in the end," she said.
Some members of the squad didn't know how to ride a bike till a few months ago, she said.
The squad members also warned youngsters against doing these stunts without proper supervision. "The process requires a lot of training and patience and only those who are adept at riding should try these stunts," said Banita.
