Kendrapara, June 11: A bride refused to marry a tipsy groom on the wedding day at a coastal village in the district.
The wedding was stopped yesterday night at Chapalli village, about 35km from here as the bride insisted on not marrying a drunken man.
“I took the decision on the spur of moment after I had been told of the alcoholic nuisance. It pained me. I could not reconcile with the fact of leading a life with a drunken man. Many persuaded me not to reject the marriage. But, I stuck to my decision,” said the bride, Subhadra Mallick, 22.
“Trouble ensued during the wedding procession. The groom, Pravat Mallick, 26, was found involved in drunken revelry dancing with the wedding party. It infuriated the bride, who flatly refused to accept him as her life partner,” said Pratap Chandra Swain, a guest.
“We have received information on such occurrence. However, no complaint has been received at the police station in this regard. Still we are inquiring into it,” said sub-divisional police officer Nrusingha Charan Swain.
“She has set a precedent. It is a message for all alcoholics. The bride and her parents deserve praise for taking such a drastic step,” said former Mahakalpada panchayat samity chairman Balaram Parida.
