Bhubaneswar, Aug. 13: The municipal corporation has begun the process to start web-based monitoring of waste management in the city.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation would track the activities - from waste collection to dumping it at its temporary yard and later at Bhuasuni - using the global positioning system (GPS).
In the process, the civic body willmonitor three private parties deployed for keeping the city clean.
A civic official said this would ensure proper cleaning in the city and maintain transparency in the solid waste management.
According to the web-based monitoring system, all garbage bins and vehicles deployed to carry waste would be fitted with the GPS devices. A firm would be hired to keep track of the activities.
"We had floated a proposal to develop, implement and support the web-based monitoring system for waste management. Now, we are on the verge of signing an agreement with a firm," he said.
Sources in the civic body said that around 10 firms had showed interest in the project and taken part in the tender process.
After the technical presentations by the private firms, two companies - one from Bhubaneswar and another from Calcutta - have been finalised to present financial bid before the corporation. Following the bid, the corporation would select the firm to carry out the project.
"The selected private firm would develop the web-based monitoring system and implement it here. Later on, it would provide to the project," said corporation's public relation officer Srimanta Mishra.
A civic body official said the Swachh Bhubaneswar cell would be the co-ordinating body for managing the tracking system.
After it is implemented, the officials can track which garbage bins have cleaned and at what time, apart from keeping tabs on vehicles deployed to carry waste materials.
Officials at the corporation's office would also be able to check whether the private firm is carrying out its job in proper manner.
The municipal body had deployed a private firm to carry out a mobile tracking system for garbage collection and disposal in the city around a year ago.
However, the contract was suspended after around one-and-a-half years following complaints about poor performance and other technical problems.
The corporation had spent around Rs 1.65 crore for the purpose.
