Cuttack, Jan. 3: Angry residents made councillors take part in a demonstration over poor sanitation and improper drainage systems at Tulasipur for over three hours today.

The residents detained Ramzan Khan of ward No. 16 and Bikash Behera of ward No. 9 for over three hours as a mark of protest against the callous attitude of the municipal corporation.

The residents blocked the main road connecting Biju Patnaik Chhak to Deula Sahi near Panchamukhi Hanuman temple to protest against the accumulation of drain water on the main road over the last two weeks.

"It was a token strike as despite repeated complaints, neither senior officials of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, nor the councillors addressed our grievances," said Abhi Mohanty, a local resident.

General secretary of Tulasipur Mahandev Puja Committee Samarendra Mohanty told The Telegraph that residents, as well as commuters, were compelled to wade through dirty water because the existing drainage system overflow round the clock.

"The poor drainage system is to be blamed for this situation. If there is accumulation of wastewater on the main road in winter, imagine what will happen during the rainy season," said Mohanty.

Local residents alleged that it is now almost 25 years that they had been facing problems due to waterlogging during the rainy season.

Municipal commissioner Gyana Das told The Telegraph: "The corporation is aware of the situation and necessary permission has been sought from the State Election Commission today for issuing work orders for repair and renovation of drainage channels at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore."
